Great South | Magellan and Whales

From the Canal Beagle to the Estrecho de Magallanes

This itinerary offers a comprehensive and suggested journey through the southern tip of Patagonia, combining wild coastlines, endless steppe, marine wildlife, protected areas, and international border crossings between Argentina and Chile. It's designed for campervan travel with complete freedom, allowing you to enjoy scenic routes and overnight stays in unique environments.

Throughout the journey, there are multiple opportunities for flora and fauna sightings, hiking, sailing, and experiences in some of the most remote landscapes in the south of the continent.

Puerto Almanza

The journey begins in Puerto Almanza, a small fishing village on the Beagle Channel. From there, you'll sail to Isla Martillo, where you can observe Magellanic and Gentoo penguins in their natural habitat.
The area also invites you to enjoy the local cuisine based on fresh seafood.

Cabo San Pablo

From the Beagle Channel, the journey heads towards the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego, visiting Cape San Pablo. Extensive beaches, open landscapes, and a completely wild environment characterize this stage, where the emblematic Desdémona shipwreck lies, beached on the shore and now one of the most photographed icons of Tierra del Fuego.

Once in Chilean territory, the route continues to Cerro Sombrero, a small Patagonian town where the overnight stay takes place, framed by steppe landscapes and open skies.

Pali Aike National Park (Chile)

From Punta Arenas, the journey crosses the Strait of Magellan by ferry to Porvenir, adding one of the most iconic experiences of the trip. This historic maritime passage was key to the exploration of the southern part of the continent and for centuries connected oceans, indigenous peoples, navigators, and expeditions to the ends of the earth. Today, the crossing allows you to traverse these legendary waters and enjoy sweeping views of the strait and its Patagonian surroundings.

Reserva Natural Pingüino Rey

Very close to Porvenir you can visit the King Penguin Nature Reserve, one of the few places in South America where it is possible to observe this species in a protected natural environment, through specially designed walkways and viewpoints.

Cameron (overnight)

The journey continues towards Cameron, a small town surrounded by steppe and open landscapes, where the overnight stay takes place, enjoying the tranquility and isolation characteristic of the area.

Before continuing south on the island, a stop is made in Rio Grande for refueling and services, preparing for the final leg of the journey.

Estancia Viamonte
